Church of Our Lady Victorious

The Church of Our Lady Victorious is an important sacral building in the Lesser Town, a short walk from the Lesser Town Square. The Renaissance and partially Baroque building was built by German-speaking Lutherans in the early 15th century as a Roman-style basilica. The church is a sought-after place because of its 47-centimetre-tall statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, which depicts Jesus at the age of 4-5 years. The wax-coated wooden statue comes from Spain and was created in the second half of the 16th century. People believe it has miraculous power. For this reason, the statue attracts a lot of people who pray to it for their healing and recovery and for help in difficult life situations. The Infant is dressed in two gowns and cloaks that are changed according to the current liturgical season. Generally, four basic colours with different meanings are used – white, red, violet and green. Altogether, the Infant Jesus of Prague has 300 different clothes, which can be seen in the freely accessible museum. Every first Sunday in May, the ceremonial coronation of the statue takes place. The Infant Jesus is then displayed in the presbytery, allowing visitors to get an up-close look at it. One of the most precious artefacts is the crown obtained as a gift from Pope Benedict XVI, who crowned the Infant Jesus during his visit in Prague in 2009. The crown is attached separately above the statue.
